Ludhiana, December 20:
On behalf of the President of India, Deputy Commissioner Ludhiana Varinder Kumar Sharma today handed over the prestigious Padma Shri to “Gurmat Sangeet” legend Prof Kartar Singh.
Prof Kartar Singh was awarded Padma Shri for his immense contribution to the field of art and owing to his health issues, he could not attend the function. Due to which, the Deputy Commissioner specially handed over the Padma Shri to Prof Kartar Singh, who is currently admitted at Hero DMC Heart Institute, here.
His family members including daughters Manjit Kaur and Sukhbir Kaur, sons Amarjit singh and Amritpal Singh, Daughter in law Amarjit Kaur, and grandchildren, were also present on the occasion.
Deputy Commissioner Varinder Kumar Sharma specially congratulated Prof Kartar Singh and his family members for this award. He said that Prof Kartar Singh has been awarded several prestigious honours for his contribution to Gurbani, which he has been practising since the age of 13 and has specialised in the popular classical music form of “tanti saaz”.
Prof Kartar Singh is one of the “Gurmat Sangeet” legends, who pursued his career in teaching music.
Expressing gratitude towards the government for recognising his services, his family members thanked the Deputy Commissioner for coming specially for handing over the prestigious Padma Shri.
The Union Government had awarded him the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award and Tagore Ratna Award for Music. He is also the recipient of the Punjab Government’s Shiromani Ragi Award, and Punjabi University’s Gurmat Sangeet Senior fellowship. He was also conferred Sikh Lifetime Achievement Award in London (UK) on October 9, 2011, and was also nominated to the Top 100 Global Sikhs by the Sikh Directory in the United Kingdom.
Singh also has five books, with a total of over 40,000 copies, on “Gurmat Sangeet”, published by the SGPC, to his credit, while his two other books were under publication. Born at Ghummanke village in Lahore (Pakistan) on April 3, 1928, Singh had done graduation and post-graduation in music (vocal and instrumental) from Panjab University, Chandigarh.

ਪ੍ਰੋਫੈਸਰ ਕਰਤਾਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਨੂੰ ਕਲਾ ਦੇ ਖੇਤਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਉਨ੍ਹਾ ਦੇ ਵਡਮੁੱਲੇ ਯੋਗਦਾਨ ਲਈ ਪਦਮ ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਨਾਲ ਸਨਮਾਨਿਤ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ।
ਸਿਹਤ ਸਮੱਸਿਆ ਦੇ ਚੱਲਦੇ ਉਹ ਰਾਸ਼ਟਰਪਤੀ ਭਵਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਸਮਾਗਮ ਵਿੱਚ ਸ਼ਾਮਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਨ ਹੋ ਸਕੇ। ਭਾਰਤ ਸਰਕਾਰ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਡਿਪਟੀ ਕਮਿਸ਼ਨਰ ਲੁਧਿਆਣਾ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਵਿਸ਼ੇਸ਼ ਤੌਰ 'ਤੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪਦਮ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਸਨਮਾਨ ਸਪੁਰਦ ਕੀਤਾ ਜੋ ਕਿ ਇਸ ਵੇਲੇ ਹੀਰੋ ਡੀ.ਐਮ.ਸੀ. ਹਾਰਟ ਇੰਸਟੀਚਿਊਟ ਦੇ ਆਈ.ਸੀ.ਯੂ. ਵਿੱਚ ਜ਼ੇਰੇ ਇਲਾਜ਼ ਹਨ।
ਇਸ ਮੌਕੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਪਰਿਵਾਰਕ ਮੈਂਬਰ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਬੇਟੀਆਂ ਮਨਜੀਤ ਕੌਰ ਤੇ ਸੁਖਬੀਰ ਕੌਰ, ਪੁੱਤਰ ਅਮਰਜੀਤ ਸਿੰਘ ਤੇ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਪਾਲ ਸਿੰਘ, ਨੂੰਹ ਅਮਰਜੀਤ ਕੌਰ ਤੇ ਪੋਤੇ-ਪੋਤੀਆਂ ਤੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਸੰਗੀਤ ਸ਼ਾਗਿਰਦ ਰਵਿੰਦਰ ਰੰਗੂਵਾਲ ਵੀ ਮੌਜੂਦ ਸਨ।
ਡਿਪਟੀ ਕਮਿਸ਼ਨਰ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਵਰਿੰਦਰ ਕੁਮਾਰ ਸ਼ਰਮਾ ਨੇ ਇਸ ਸਨਮਾਨ ਲਈ ਪ੍ਰੋ: ਕਰਤਾਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਜੀ ਅਤੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਪਰਿਵਾਰਕ ਮੈਂਬਰਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਵਿਸ਼ੇਸ਼ ਤੌਰ 'ਤੇ ਵਧਾਈ ਦਿੱਤੀ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਪ੍ਰੋ: ਕਰਤਾਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਨੂੰ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਗੁਰਬਾਣੀ ਸੰਗੀਤ ਬਾਰੇ ਸਿਧਾਂਤਕ ਪੁਸਤਕਾਂ ਲਿਖਣ, ਗੁਰਬਾਣੀ ਦਾ ਰਾਗਾਂ ਮੁਤਾਬਕ ਗਾਇਨ ਅਤੇ ਸਿਖਲਾਈ ਦੇ ਖੇਤਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਬਹੁਤ ਵੱਜਾ ਯੋਗਦਾਨ ਹੈ। ਭਾਵੇਂ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਯੋਗਦਾਨ ਲਈ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਵੀ ਵੱਖ-ਵੱਖ ਉੱਚ ਪੱਧਰੀ ਸਨਮਾਨਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਨਵਾਜਿਆ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ,ਪਰ ਪਦਮ ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਸਨਮਾਨ ਸਰਵੋਤਮ ਹੈ।
ਪ੍ਰੋਃ ਕਰਤਾਰ ਸਿੰਘ 13 ਸਾਲ ਦੀ ਉਮਰ ਤੋਂ ਸੰਗੀਤ ਅਭਿਆਸ ਕਰ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਸਿੱਧ ਸ਼ਾਸਤਰੀ ਸੰਗੀਤ ਦੇ ਰੂਪ 'ਤੰਤੀ ਸਾਜ਼' ਵਿੱਚ ਮੁਹਾਰਤ ਹਾਸਲ ਹੈ।
ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਸੇਵਾਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਣ ਦੇਣ 'ਤੇ ਸਰਕਾਰ ਦਾ ਧੰਨਵਾਦ ਕਰਦੇ ਹੋਏ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਪਰਿਵਾਰਕ ਮੈਂਬਰਾਂ ਨੇ ਡਿਪਟੀ ਕਮਿਸ਼ਨਰ ਦਾ ਵੀ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਨਿੱਜੀ ਤੌਰ 'ਤੇ ਪਹੁੰਚ ਕੇ ਭਾਰਤ ਸਰਕਾਰ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਪਦਮ ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਪ੍ਰਦਾਨ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਵਿਸ਼ੇਸ਼ ਸ਼ੁ਼ਕਾਰਾਨਾ ਕੀਤਾ।
ਇਸ ਤੋਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਭਾਰਤ ਸਰਕਾਰ ਨੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸੰਗੀਤ ਨਾਟਕ ਅਕਾਦਮੀ ਪੁਰਸਕਾਰ ਅਤੇ ਸੰਗੀਤ ਲਈ ਟੈਗੋਰ ਰਤਨ ਪੁਰਸਕਾਰ ਨਾਲ ਸਨਮਾਨਿਤ ਕੀਤਾ ਸੀ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਸਰਕਾਰ ਦੇ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਵਿਭਾਗ ਦਾ ਸ਼੍ਰੋਮਣੀ ਰਾਗੀ ਐਵਾਰਡ ਅਤੇ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਯੂਨੀਵਰਸਿਟੀ ਦੀ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਸੰਗੀਤ ਸੀਨੀਅਰ ਫੈਲੋਸ਼ਿਪ ਅਵਾਰਡ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰਨ ਦਾ ਵੀ ਮਾਣ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੈ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ 9 ਅਕਤੂਬਰ, 2011 ਨੂੰ ਲੰਡਨ (ਯੂ.ਕੇ.) ਵਿੱਚ ਸਿੱਖ ਲਾਈਫਟਾਈਮ ਅਚੀਵਮੈਂਟ ਅਵਾਰਡ ਨਾਲ ਵੀ ਸਨਮਾਨਿਤ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ ਸੀ, ਅਤੇ ਯੂਨਾਈਟਿਡ ਕਿੰਗਡਮ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਿੱਖ ਡਾਇਰੈਕਟਰੀ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਚੋਟੀ ਦੇ 100 ਗਲੋਬਲ ਸਿੱਖਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਵੀ ਨਾਮਜ਼ਦ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ ਸੀ।
ਪਰੋਫੈਸਰ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦੀਆਂ ਪੰਜ ਕਿਤਾਬਾਂ ਵੀ ਹਨ, ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਕੁੱਲ 40 ਹਜ਼ਾਰ ਪ੍ਰਤੀਆਂ ਹਨ, ਜੋ ਕਿ ਸ਼੍ਰੋਮਣੀ ਕਮੇਟੀ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼ਿਤ 'ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਸੰਗੀਤ' 'ਤੇ ਹਨ, ਜਦੋਂ ਕਿ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਦੋ ਹੋਰ ਪੁਸਤਕਾਂ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼ਨ ਅਧੀਨ ਹਨ। 3 ਅਪ੍ਰੈਲ 1928 ਨੂੰ ਲਾਹੌਰ (ਪਾਕਿਸਤਾਨ) ਦੇ ਪਿੰਡ ਘੁੰਮਣਕੇ ਵਿਖੇ ਜਨਮੇ ਪ੍ਰੋ: ਕਰਤਾਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਨੇ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਯੂਨੀਵਰਸਿਟੀ, ਚੰਡੀਗੜ੍ਹ ਤੋਂ ਸੰਗੀਤ (ਵੋਕਲ ਅਤੇ ਇੰਸਟਰੂਮੈਂਟਲ) ਵਿੱਚ ਗ੍ਰੈਜੂਏਸ਼ਨ ਅਤੇ ਪੋਸਟ ਗ੍ਰੈਜੂਏਸ਼ਨ ਕੀਤੀ ਸੀ। ਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਨਕ ਗਰਲਜ਼ ਕਾਲਿਜ ਲੁਧਿਆਣਾ ਵਿੱਚ ਉਹ ਸਾਰੀ ਉਮਰ ਸੰਗੀਤ ਵਿਭਾਗ ਦੇ ਮੁਖੀ ਰਹੇ।
